Crocheted Mermaid Rag Doll

Crocheted Mermaid Friends

Crocheted Mermaid Rag Doll 6I’m excited to share with you my pattern for Crocheted Mermaid Rag Doll using bulky yarn. I love all things mermaid and I love Bernat Blanket Yarn. I used my mermaid vibes to combine these together and designed Crocheted Mermaid Rag Doll. I started making these a little over a year ago and I have probably made about 30 in a year. Through the process I have tweaked the pattern to where I feel comfortable releasing it.

The pattern is easy to break down. It’s a front and back for the body, head, tail and arms.
The shells are adding for the bikini top along with a simple mouth and safety eyes. Then it’s simple single crocheting around with matching colors in sections while adding the hair in top of head. In the past I have added curly single crochet strands for back of head if you prefer that look they can be added. The last step is making fins and sewing them on. I have generally used Bernat Blanket Yarn however I had a special request for hair color and use 2 strands of worsted weight and it turned out perfect. So you can substitute 2 strands of worsted weight yarn if you prefer. The Crocheted Mermaid Rag Doll is a fun project that can be worked up in a weekend and makes a really lovely gift.

Crocheted Mermaid Rag Doll 2There are so many color choices. I have made a variety of colors for hair and tail. I’ll put in Materials Needed and few of my most popular requests but you can choose any color you desire. The colors I used for shells has been discontinued so my suggestions are below. However you can use what every color you desire there too. For assembly I knot my ends on the inside as I assemble the Mermaid. This is convenient and I know ends are secure. Have fun making a Rag Doll Mermaid!

ARMS:

Crocheted Mermaid Rag Doll 5With right sides facing you, create 2 arms on each side of body.

For Right Arm:

Row 1: Attach yarn just below 2nd row from the top, on side of body. CH 1, SC, SC.

Row 2 – 7: CH 1, SC, SC. Fasten off and leave a tail to knot on inside.

For Left Arm:

Row 1: Attach yarn 1st row from the top, on side of body. CH 1, SC, SC.

Row 2 – 7: CH 1, SC, SC. Fasten off and leave a tail to knot on inside.

You now have a front and back. It’s time to create shells and add the face. I added 2 9mm eyes, I didn’t add eyelashes but you could add some with embroidery floss. I also took a 4 inch piece of pink yarn, preferably Bernat Blanket Yarn, and made lips by just wrapping yarn around from inside to out twice and knotting on the inside. I’m not a fancy face maker.

SHELLS:

With color your using for shells, make a magic ring.

Side 1: Into magic ring, CH 2, 2 DC, CH 2, SL ST. Pull magic ring closed and you will have 1 shell. Now to make Side 2 you will CH 3 and turn you work.

Side 2: Working in 3 loop from hook, towards Side 1, 2 DC, CH 2, SL ST in all in same stitch. Leave a long tail at least 6 inches to sew onto mermaid’s body. When you fasten off you should have 2 shells next to each other, side by side.

Weave or sew on shells to front of Mermaid.

Crocheted Mermaid Rag Doll 4FINS:

Working on both side of chain you will make 4 fins. On the completion of 2nd fin you will SL ST 1st and 2nd fin together. then on completion of 4th, you will SL ST 3rd and 4th together.

With yarn used for Tail, CH 13, in 2nd CH form hook, SL, next SC, DC 8, SC, SL ST, CH 1, working on back side of chain now, SL ST, SC, DC 8, SC, SL ST. On 1st fin, leave a 4 inch tail. On 2, fin put wrong side of 1 and 2 tougher and SL ST through both. At end CH 1 to keep end pointed, then SL ST on other side. Leave a 6-8 in tail for sewing onto Mermaid. Repeat 3 and 4 same as 1 and 2.

ASSEMBLE:

As you come to lose ends knot them together on the inside. There are a few points where 2 ends are not right next to each other so I knotted them with out pulling ends to tight to the met in the middle. It’s easier to knot ends and secure them on the inside.

Now it’s time to assemble and add hair. Put wrong sides together, with the front of Mermaid facing you attach tail color yarn at right below waist line where color changes. SC both pieces together.

SC down and on bottom of tail 2 SC in corners. SC back to to waistline. At waitlist where it turns to body color change to body color on completion of SC.

SC up to arm pits.

At corner where armpit of Mermaid is, 3 SC TOG, this keeps arm in a normal position.

SC down arms, at end of arms where fingers would be 2 SC to make a round edge.

SC to bottom of head. SC and on completion of 2nd SC change to Hair colored yarn.

CH 20, SC in 2 CH from hook, 2 SC in next CH. Repeat SC, 2 SC 7 more times. Then in last 3 CH’s, SC. In next stitch of head, SC through both front and back of head.

SC, CH 22, SC in 2 CH from hook, 2 SC in next CH. Repeat SC, 2 SC 7 more times. Then in last 5 CH’s, SC. In next stitch of head, SC through both front and back of head.

You’ll be right before top corner of head. SC TOG, CH 24, SC in 2 CH from hook, 2 SC in next CH. Repeat SC, 2 SC 8 more times. Then in last 5 CH’s, SC. In next stitch of head, SC through both front and back of head.

On top of head. SC, CH 24, SC in 2 CH from hook, 2 SC in next CH. Repeat SC, 2 SC 8 more times. Then in last 5 CH’s, SC. In next stitch of head, SC through both front and back of head. REPEAT 2 MORE TIMES!

You’ll be at next top corner of head. SC TOG, CH 24, SC in 2 CH from hook, 2 SC in next CH. Repeat SC, 2 SC 8 more times. Then in last 5 CH’s, SC. In next stitch of head, SC through both front and back of head.

SC, CH 22, SC in 2 CH from hook, 2 SC in next CH. Repeat SC, 2 SC 7 more times. Then in last 5 CH’s, SC. In next stitch of head, SC through both front and back of head.

CH 20, SC in 2 CH from hook, 2 SC in next CH. Repeat SC, 2 SC 7 more times. Then in last 3 CH’s, SC. In next stitch of head, SC and change to body color on completion of SC.

SC to arm and stuff your tail and head. I do not stuff arms. I stuff for a medium to slightly firm fill to keep Mermaid straight.

Repeat arm with 2 SC at end for rounded edge and 3 SC TOG in armpit of Mermaid. SC to waistline. Finish stuffing before you get to waistline.

SC back to waistline and instead of slip stitching stop at SC right before you started. Fasten off and leave a 3 inch tail. To make an invisible join, I weave under the front top of the next SC and then weave in on backside of Mermaid to secure end.

ADD TAIL:

I use a G hook to weave my fins on as bulky yarn can be tough to weave in. With fin points together on bottom front of tail I weave and secure fins together and to tail. I secure ends on back side of Mermaid’s tail to make sure fins are firmly secure.
